Hub2Move

The sites for transshipment terminals and distribution centers are currently determined due to a whole series of factors and are designed for a service life of 15 years and more. However, the requirements for hubs are changing more and more quickly in these times of volatile markets and worldwide goods streams, so not only the structures of the hub, but also the site that was originally chosen can be called into question after a few years.

The hub of the future – a transshipment terminal which can easily be relocated – should therefore be easy to adapt to changing requirements. It should be possible to adjust handling, conveying and warehousing technology in the hub to new requirements within a few days. An entire hub should be ready for operation at a new site within a few weeks.

Objective of the project

The project Hub2Move follows the model of a changeable warehouse, whereby the acronym should also be applicable to material flow systems in which the functional elements of the physical material flow can easily be adjusted to changing requirements or moved to a more suitable location to perform those functions. The aim is to increase the flexibility and efficiency of the logistical performance for physical material flow. From the scientific point of view the measurability of the parameters that can cause a change and influence the extent and scope of the change is of great interest.
Different application scenarios are being planned based on e-commerce warehouses and an engineering company’s original parts distribution with highly fluctuating demand throughout the year.

Specific innovations

The basic concepts for the inherent adaptability as well as the ability to move a hub are to be developed in this project. This will result in a holistic concept for a Hub2Move – from deriving the structure and sizes, designs for changeable plants, material flow and software concepts to design tools for integration.
The technology necessary for the integration of complete logistics systems has to meet requirements of changeability which it does not yet have to face today. Important elements of the technological developments within this project therefore include cellular transport systems and autonomous vehicles which will fulfill the main tasks of different types of conveying with suitable functions and reduced complexity. The forms of cooperation for these systems and the functional elements necessary for the overall functions of a Hub2Move will be integrated in the application scenarios together with the technology partners.
