Minimally Invasive Construction Projects

A sound infrastructure requires maintenance and care. Road works however always hamper the flow of traffic. Holistically planned construction logistics can improve traffic flow by up to 15 per cent. Furthermore, reducing the volume of road works traffic and avoiding traffic jams can reduce CO2 emissions by ten per cent. The construction period itself can be cut by up to five per cent.

Until now there have been virtually no instruments available to effectively coordinate the directly related elements of traffic and infrastructure improvement schemes. Only a few major ventures have had the benefit of logistical coordination from outside. As a result traffic jams caused by road works amount to more than 100,000 km per year, at an estimated cost to the economy of several billion euros.

The Objective of the Joint Project

The cue for this project was the traffic situation in the Ruhr Region: the disruption caused by motorway maintenance, construction and repairs here is immense. The aim is to minimise, both ecologically and economically, the negative impact of prolonged road works, inconvenient plant traffic and incorrectly dimensioned storage areas. Above all, something has to be done about the inadequate flow of information between engineering companies, suppliers and traffic planners. The project is to be piloted in the Ruhr Region itself.

Specific Innovations

The plan is to automate the flow of information between the stakeholders with the help of a new information terminal. The integration of state-of-the-art services, innovative technologies and specialist knowledge will optimise the logistical handling of road works. The software electronically records the operations of the different suppliers at road work sites via standardised interfaces. A systemised ordering procedure which allows deliveries to be bundled reduces the volume of plant traffic. User-friendly tools will optimise key aspects of the construction work, such as the coordination of disposals or the provision of storage areas.
