Scientific Training and Education in the Logistics Sector (WiWeLo)

Vocational and university education are the two main ways of qualifying in logistics which currently run parallel to each other at the moment. Going along with the general trend for higher qualifications, the demands on employees’ specialist skills and abilities at work are also rising, which in turn leads to an increased need for vocational training activities.

In this context, innovative qualification concepts are needed to cover the changing requirements for skills along the entire value added chain in industrial and commercial organizations, logistics service providers and transport companies. This applies to both academic and non-academic groups of employees in both industrial and commercial fields. Only wide-ranging qualification and training concepts will be able to form a basis for innovations along the entire supply chain, which will then contribute to creating more efficient logistics processes

Objective of the Project

The WiWeLo project mainly focuses its activities on the development, testing, processing and evaluation of customized qualification and study concepts for the logistics industry. The basis of the concept and the organization of learning is developed in close co-ordination with experienced representatives in this field who have formulated the development horizons. Detailed analyses of the training requirements of specific vocational groups at different hierarchical levels form the starting point for their activities.

Specific Innovations

Based on the objective of building a bridge between vocational and academic training, the development of certification for various logistic target groups at different vocational status levels has priority in this project. On the one hand, the conceptual approach is based on extending access to vocational training for employed people who do not have the formal qualifications to enter university, on the other hand the trend towards the academization of knowledge is also taken into account in the area of vocational training. It is planned, for example, to develop a new formal professional qualification (master craftsman) for inland waterways navigation that allows university admission and thus participation in scientific further education. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a system for crediting formally and informally attained vocational skills and experience. The project activities aim to present the professional values in a sector-specific qualification framework for logistics and to adapt it to the developments within the framework of German qualifications.

At institutional level the project activities are to be bundled in a new service point: DIALOGistik Duisburg which is to be based in the Duisburg harbor. DIALOGistik Duisburg has been set up to act as an interface between science and practice. This contact point for knowledge transfer, training, qualification and efficiency in logistics in the Duisburg harbor is also aligned to the prospect of setting up a global logistics academy or a professional school.
