Logistics Mall - Cloud Computing for Logistics

The Logistics Mall is a virtual shopping centre where software providers, users and logistics services are brought together. It optimizes cost-benefit relationships when implementing new software. In the past warehouse optimization was carried out by means of a complex restructuring of the logistics processes, now the software can be put together individually and is independent of any particular vendor – it can then be drawn from the cloud on demand.

Although 57 percent of large companies use a Warehouse Management System today, only 30 percent of the small and medium-sized companies do. This is because the licensing, integration and running costs are just too high for them – particularly because they do not even need many of the modules included in the established software packages. So if they want to perform successfully in future, logistics software suppliers will have to be able to offer their customers individualized, cheaper services with specific IT support at short notice.

Objective of the Project

The Logistics Mall project is creating the conditions to make it possible to provide and market logistics IT services and processes as products in a cloud. A virtual store for logistics services – the Logistics Mall - is being developed in various stages and in fact is already being used by several industry partners. In the Logistics Mall suppliers can offer individual processes and transport services or enter their software modules. Logistics process designers then link these modules up to form process chains. The users can then draw on complete or individual IT services in the cloud and thus purchase the specific support they need for their procedures.

Specific Innovations

Cloud computing makes it possible to provide logistics services and IT support on demand. The most complex logistics processes can be presented and implemented in the Logistics Mall. This complete virtualization of the IT environment replaces cost-intensive server structures: calculations reveal that companies can achieve cost savings of up to 50 percent. In the Logistics Mall, once customers have agreed to the appropriate contract, they can access their own private zone via their web browser and use the software they need. Invoicing is managed by the operator of the Mall.

The Logistics Mall is a virtual shopping centre where software providers deliver individual IT services. This gives the user even more choices. Instead of being forced to buy a complete software package, users can just rent the functions they really need.
