Reliable Networks for Logistics - Reliable Transport Chains Thanks to Mulitmodal Logistics

The rising complexity and growing dynamics of the transport chain in the steel industry call for new control and logistics strategies. The usually rather static procurement and distribution networks are able to meet the strict confines of these changes only to a limited degree.

When short-term disruptions occur, for example a supplier is unable to deliver, environmental factors or traffic jams cause delays, an alternative solution has to be found in the existing logistics chain. Transport reliability therefore requires the use of modern software and hardware technologies. Concepts such as SCEM - Supply Chain Event Management or RFID technology open up completely new opportunities for improving efficiency and intelligence of transport logistics, inside and outside the company.

Objective of the Joint Project

This project will examine and optimise the value chain, i.e. the entire procedure of order processing, from the steel manufacturer, processing companies and logistics service providers to the end customers, while focussing on logistical aspects. For this reason, representatives of every stage of the process are involved in the project. The aim is to raise the reliability of supply in the transport chain through transparency of information and anticipatory information. The resulting system will identify alternative strategies before they are needed. This means making optimum use of the opportunities offered by the existing logistics network. Any necessary enhancements to the logistics structures to improve reliability should be gaugeable with a view to cost-benefit analysis and risk assessment.

Specific Innovations

The focus of system design is always on the information networking of all stakeholders. A joint web platform provides information with coordinated processes. Agent technologies are ideally suited to the collection of relevant data. Agent technology is an IT concept which is flexible, autonomous and equipped with a certain degree of intelligence. It can therefore prove particularly useful in dynamic environments with unpredictable developments. The software modules installed at the interfaces of the participating partners interact automatically and according to predefined rules with the other software agents at the other end. The software modules react flexibly to a wide variety of information and system statuses. Any missing data is simply requested by the system – without any manual intervention necessary.
