Dynamics in Navigation - never get stuck in a Traffic Jam again

Today’s navigation systems are not in a position to make full use of the capacities in the dense and heavily travelled road network in the Ruhr Region: Cars and trucks waste a lot of time in traffic jams. Intelligent systems will improve traffic flows so that traffic jams do not occur in the first place.

Each year there are about 400,000 kilometers of traffic jams on the 12,800 kilometers of highway in Germany. Because most navigation systems work with the same static information, they also offer drivers the same alternative routes in case of disruptions which in turn lead to new traffic jams. Alternative routes are often side roads which get overloaded very quickly. Moreover, the latest information from the public traffic management system – for example diversions or closures – is not taken into consideration when alternative routes are determined. At the moment, it is not possible for any of the navigation systems to make individual route calculations.

Objective of the Project

Intelligent navigation systems will make the vision of “never get stuck in a traffic jam” a reality. The project focuses on the optimization of route recommendations. By means of data exchange between navigation systems and a direction center, feedback with individual recommendations and collective control measures will be made possible. Based on this information, processes and strategies will be developed that lead to an individual and optimized distribution of route recommendations and to improved utilization of the reserves of traffic networks. The new generation of control systems will act in an anticipatory way and consider the effects of their recommendations on the entire traffic network. The future improved service will not only include the latest traffic situation in its calculations but also consider prognoses.

Specific Innovations

By optimizing traffic navigation systems, driving time could be significantly reduced. Journeys will become more stress-free and relaxed for road users, for companies monetary advantages will arise as employees spend less time on the highway and need less time for any particular route. This new kind of individuality means the whole traffic network will be under less pressure and traffic will be spread out more evenly.
